What kind of topic for small talk with your colleagues when you work in Singapore ? Well, if you are new in Singapore, here’s some small topic idea to start.

Apartments / House
Start with “where do you live” or “which area do you live”. Then continue with “how big is your house”, “how much room that you have”, “how much does it cost”. Or continue with “I know some of my friend who bought the house in that area spent XXX thousands of money”.

Food
Start with “have you tried XXX food at XXX”. Then wait for the response before continue with “I tried the same food at other XXX area, it’s nice / better / worse / more expensive / cheaper”. Be prepared if people ask you “how much do you spend for XXX food there ?”

Vacation / Travel
Start with “have you been to XXX”. Then wait for the response. Probably he / she will tell you where have he / she been for holiday. Then replied with “have you seen XXX specific of that area also ?”. Be prepared if they ask you “how much do you spend for the air tickets ?” or “how much that you spent there”.

Branded Stuffs
Branded stuffs are always part of Singapore. When I talked to a friend that I played badminton, the first question was “what racket that you use (referring to Yonex or other brand) ?”. When you are regular runner, don’t be surprised if someone ask you, “what shoes that you wear to run (referring to Adidas, Nike, or Reebok or other kind of branded sport shoes)”.

So, if you are new in Singapore, be prepared to be gauged by the money that you have. They won’t ask you how much that you earn, but they definitely will ask you how much that you spent.

Not comfortable ? Well, money talks in this city, including the small talk ones.

Subject: program mikro arm

Salam hormat

Sebelumnya mohon maaf mengganggu bapak.

Demikian permohonan saya, saya tunggu jawabannya

Or could be translated as:

With regards.

Sorry for disturbing you.

Pizza Recipe

Making your own pizza is a fun way to release your stress and hunger (or adding your stress if you have guests coming, and not having the things ready on time). Not to forget that it’s very cheap too.

Here’s the pizza recipe that we have tried for the past 2 weeks. It costs around SGD 20 for pizza dough and its toppings (mozarella, mushroom, capsicum, tomato).

Pizza Dough
For 2-3 persons serving:

  • 7/8 cup of bread flour (or high-protein flour)
  • 1/3 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of olive virgin oil
  • The yeast solution (see below)
  • The crust glazing solution (see below)

The yeast in the dough makes a difference between thick or thin pizza. By default, if you cannot activate the yeast properly, you will end up with thin crust pizza. So, no worries about getting too much or too little of the yeast. You will still end up with pizza dough anyway 🙂

The yeast solution:

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of lukewarm water (not too hot or it will kill the yeast, not too cold or it will take a lot of time to activate it)
  • 3.5 gr of active dry yeast

The crust glazing solution is needed to make your crust brown colored (without these, the dough will be white in the edge, although it’s cooked).

The crust glaze solution:

  • 3 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of hot water
  • small amount of bread flour

The Making of Pizza Dough

  1. Make the yeast solution first, by dissolving the sugar into the lukewarm water. Add yeast and a bit of flour as indicator. Mix everything and wait 6-8 minutes, or until you see the solution bubbles / foaming. Put into separate glass.
  2. Mix flour, salt and olive oil in a flat pan. Add the yeast solution little by little and start to knead it.
  3. Knead the dough until it doesn’t stick in your hand. If it’s too wet (like a slime), add more flour. If it’s too sticky, add a bit of olive oil. If it’s too dry, add more lukewarm water.
  4. Rest the kneaded dough in a bowl. Cover it with wet towel, and wait until it doubled in size. It takes around 2-hours.
  5. Knead the rested dough again for 10-minutes (or until it doesn’t stick in your hand).
  6. Lubricate the baking pan with the olive oil. Then start to shape the dough to cover the baking pan. The dough will raise with empty pockets of CO2. Get some fork to poke some holes into it.
  7. Make the crust glaze by mixing the salt and the water. Then, using your finger, polish the edge of the dough with the salt water. Add flour to cover the salt watered dough edge.
  8. Pre bake the dough with the oven. For thin crust, use 5-mins with 240 C. For thick dough, use 10-mins with 240 C. The preferred heat source is from bottom.
  9. After pre-baked, add the toppings that you want and bake it again for good. Recommended measurement is 10-mins with 240 C

And that’s all folks..Hopefully you’ll ended with a nice home made pizza.

The Toppings
Here’s the topping that we’ve tried:

  • Tomato puree
  • Ripe Tomato (sliced)
  • Mushrooms
  • Capsicum
  • Mozarella

Just woke up, and had this Android phone on my hand. So just want to post the nightmare that I’ve been through for the last 4 hours I think.

I remember that I went to some vocation on some island, the room was simple, small, with double deck beds. I was sleeping below when I felt like huge quake strike in. I heard my neighbour stuffs falling over with huge crash voice. I tried to get away from the bed but I couldn’t. Then I was thinking that tsunami was going to strike soon. So I pushed my self very hard to get off from the bed. When finally I could get off from the bed, suddenly I realized that I was still in Singapore. Either that quake was real or not I haven’t know it yet. So I went to toilet and check my watch. It was 4am something, and I got 2 emails on this phone.

I went back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning  suddenly realized that it was not in my bed in Singapore. The room was smaller with yellowish walls, the bed made from hard wood bigger than mine. The neighbour, which I couldn’t recognized, told me that he was annoyed with the noises coming from my room. I told him that I would look into it, although I also wondered what was going on.

Then I think I went down to the car park, not sure for what reason. I saw all of the faces of unknown people. The cars were old, something like sedan in 90’s with boxed look. Then I woke up again in my bed in Singapore.

I tried to sleep back again. When I woke up, I ended in the small room again, with yellowish walls, and double deck beds. This time I was curious about the noises that the previous guy was talking about. I looked at the upper deck bed, and found nothing but pillows.

I felt very tired, and tried to sleep at the lower deck bed. Suddenly I felt like someone was holding my arms, more like judo locking, very tight. I tried to look who was that, but I couldn’t. Something was holding my neck’s movement. I struggled very hard until I could loose the grip on my hand and my neck.

I looked at my back, to the person who grab my hand. He, or she, was very small, pale skinned, very skinny until you can see his bones through, bald, and the scariest part was that he didn’t have a nose. It only looked like triangle hole on where the nose should be. He was totally looked like living skull.

I was trying to run away from him, when I heard him yell at me “you feed me”. That’s the point where I woke up.

What a nightmare..
